Raspberries of Peace Stampa E-mail

General aim: to improve the quality of life in Bratunac, in particular for families composed by only women and poor families. It aims also to encourage the restart of economic activities and of the social relationships between the populations (and specifically between different ethnic groups).

Specific target: restarting rural economy in a sustainable way, through the creation of a micro-economic system, based on the farming of small fruits (raspberries and strawberries).

What has already been done:


- at the beginning, fund-raising for an emergency support for the poorest families

 

- setting-up of the Zemljoradnicka Zadruga Insieme SA P.O. (Cooperativa Agricola Insieme), a farm cooperative, formed by men and women, both Serbian and Muslims. Set up in 2003, by 10 members, it has now more than 500 members

- introduction of new varieties of perennial raspberries, of strawberries, of blackberries and blueberries, in order to diversify the production and lengthen the period of harvesting

 

- technical assistance for the farms in Bratunac and surroundings

 

- training courses in Italy for the cooperative’s technicians (about new varieties, growing techniques, irrigation systems, organic farming, about the role of a cooperative and farm administration)

 

- training courses in Bratunac for the cooperative’s members

 

- building of an open breeding ground and a greenhouse for the production of raspberries’ mother plant with a guarantee of quality and health (production capacity: 120000 plants per year)

 

- building of a freezing facilities specific for small fruits, with a capacity of storage of more than 300 tones

 

- donations of tools and machineries needed by the cooperative in its activities and contributions from ACS in the cooperative personnel remunerations

 

- installation and start of a workshop for the production of jams

The activities are addressed to cooperative’s members and to the population, in particular to the families of elderly women or of women who live alone and to the refugees who came back.“Cooperativa Insieme”  promotes the cohabitation between Bosnian-Muslim and Serbo-Orthodox communities and helped in restarting the dialogue between the different ethnic groups.

 

To contribute to this purpose, ACS has helped in organizing a net of support, involving a large number of third sector’s organizations and other Italian local authorities. ACS has organised responsible tourism travels, institutional missions, sending trainees and technical advisers. It has also organised the participation of Cooperativa Insieme’s representatives in public events in Italy.

This project has been developed in cooperation with Forum Zena Bratunac and with the contribution of Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs - Italian Development Cooperation

 

Future steps

  • - introduction of irrigation systems

  • - start up the product transformation facilities in Bratunac, to produce jams, juices and syrups

  • - achievement of the economic independency for the cooperative

 

The resources in order to achieve these targets come partially from a project co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (cod. 8994/ACS/BSN), and will come also from the marketing of the products, but, at the moment, it is essential to keep supporting “Cooperativa Insieme” and the farms.

 

Furthermore, it is really important also to keep supporting the weakest part of the population (families of lonely women and of returned refugees), to feed their basic needs. This will enable to successively involve them in the cooperative.
